Light exploded into the forest, and Hawk in the Sky woke up with a start. He had been fighting a demon, and was grateful for the intrusion of the dawn. Another face full of fangs, and burning eyes tried to return, until he shook it off and stood up. Nervous, he instinctively checked for his weapons. His horse stood by and snorted, as if to say, “C’mon let’s get going”. He called the spotted one to him, and slipped the bridle over his nose. He spoke softly, running a hand over the horse’s neck. He said how grateful he was to have him, and that none of the other horses had his good instincts for maneuvering during a hunt. It was true, and the horse shook his head in agreement.
The deer loved to eat in the great meadow, at the edge of the forest each morning. He would fight that demon another time, but right now it was time to hunt. He had a family to feed, and his wife would be waiting at their lodge. He rode the spotted one into the light.
