Rumi is right of course. Have you ever had a debate with someone, maybe even a family member, and you started getting angry in the middle of it? Your voice started going up, and before you knew it you were yelling. How did the conversation go after that? Was it productive? We all get angry, we’re human. Sometimes we can’t help it and we know the other person is wrong!
I think what Rumi is saying here is that the gentle response will always be the best response. Not much will be accomplished by our loud noises. In a debate or argument, the other person will tend to tune us out, if all we are doing is yelling. We can get our point across in a much more effective way, if we speak with calm authority.
I don’t think Rumi was addressing fighting against social injustice, but even then, this principle can be applied. A collective voice of people can do a lot more good than rioting and looting. I’m thinking here of the peaceful protests, like during the days of Dr. Martin Luther King. We need to fight against wrongs done to people, but in a peaceful way.
Many of us enjoy, the wonder and beauty of a gentle rain. We even write poems about it. But very few, if any of us, enjoy hearing the thunder. Where is the beauty in anger?
Blessings to everyone and PEACE!

Very true!
we all love rain and flowers. The fragrance and the sweet chirp of birds are all associated with the beauty of nature. But, the thunder and storm are always associated with the fury of nature.
