Three days out from the Bahamas, they all ate breakfast on the deck, watching the sunrise. There had been a storm last night, and they were all awake anyway, so it seemed like the right thing to do. It was a celebration really, of having survived. As Robert looked around the makeshift table, he realized they were all survivors, each in different ways.
Chuck, who was the cook, had whipped up some western style omelets, after getting the kitchen back in order. And as they all sat down to eat, they hesitated, as if someone should pray. They looked at each other, smiled and dug in. Robert thought he had seen tears in some of their eyes. They all savored the omelets, and watched the sun come up over the horizon. It was as if the earth was being born all over again.
He thought about Chuck and the others. Chuck had been a chef in some of the finest restaurants in Miami, until the drugs got ahold of him. After spending more than a year in jail, he was anxious to start again. He needed this job to get his head together, and to be away from the city.
Belinda was the first mate and the best of them all, when it came to sailing. She was a strong woman and she worked almost constantly. Still, once in a while she would tear up, thinking about the broken relationship she was trying to get over. That’s all she ever said about it, and no one asked her more.
Jonathan and Elaine, had lost several fortunes, until they made it big in the cosmetics industry. Now their newest fight was Elaine’s battle with breast cancer. It looked like they were winning though, after the chemo and a double mastectomy. They were learning how to live all over again, thus the sailing trip. With only being in their sixties, they had a lot of living left to do.
Yes they were all survivors, fighting the good fight, and all of them were seeking a new beginning. Even the sunrise agreed. Somehow….. they all felt like they were in this fight, together.
To be continued.
