“Miriam I’m not going to farm with a horse, I’m just not going to do that.” Miriam responded, with a concerned look on her face, “But Jeremiah……we need to learn how……someday there will be no electricity, which means there will be no petrol, and no diesel either!” They were in their lab building, having their first planning meeting about how they were going to conduct farming. It looked more like a war room, with maps, charts, print outs from the internet, lab equipment, and hundreds of seedlings.
Jeremiah thought for a moment, then said, “I think we have enough supplies to last us about two years, especially if we get a tanker truck filled with diesel, for the tractors”. He continued, “…..and then we can learn the whole process gradually.” He had her on that one, and he knew it. Miriam scrunched up her face.
He had been wanting to tell her all morning, so he jumped in with “Miriam……you’re so beautiful.” She just looked at him, then said, “Don’t change the subject!” He was very good at that, and would often distract her with his sweet words, and kisses. He moved in, and she held up a long finger, and said, “No, no, no, not right now…” He kissed her cheek, and moved to her ear…. She said softly, “Jeremiah, we need to get some work done.”
They did get some work done, at least they planned out the fields, meaning how they would divide them up, and which crops would go where. Their staple crops would be corn, potatoes, and spinach. They both loved spinach and they knew the incredible nutritional value of the green. More importantly, they planned a 5 acre plot of land, close to the house, that would be their garden. This would involve intensive work daily, in order to grow all sorts of vegetables, and fruit. All of it, would be as natural , and as organic as possible. Miriam had already done years of research on natural ways, to keep pests, and parasites off the crops, using natural means. This included soapy water, cayenne pepper mixed in water, and a dozen other ways.
They broke for lunch, and on the way back to the house, Jeremiah brought up a topic he wanted to discuss, which was literature, and art. Once he was in the kitchen, he started making a salad, while Miriam sat and listened. He said, “We need to have a library, and we need to have another meeting, to discuss what should be in the library.” “I want our children, and future generations, to have the best literature possible.” Miriam was thrilled and said, “Jeremiah that’s brilliant, you’re absolutely right!”
He was about to set the two bowls of salad, and some olive oil on the table, we they both heard the familiar humming sound of a drone. Miriam turned towards it, and said quietly, “It seems to be coming from the front of the house.” Jeremiah said nothing, and simply froze where he was, standing, facing the counter top.
It was gone within seconds, and then Jeremiah began serving the salad. She was proud of him, and she smiled from ear to ear, especially after he had told her about the guns at the neighbor’s house. They enjoyed their lunch, talking about literature. Jeremiah said, “No, I don’t think we should include Shakespeare, he was too anti-Semitic.” “What!”, Miriam was shocked.
What they did not know, was that this drone left a package for them on the front lawn. And it was a very important package……
