“The problem with fear, is that it makes the horrible things we go through, seem a hundred times worse.”
Fear can be a prison. We all go through terrible things at some point in our lives. But when we become afraid, we allow the horrible things to control us, and the fear of those horrible things, can cloud our thinking. We will have a difficult time seeing the real issues clearly.
Sometimes this can happen when a prolonged period of calamity, or perceived calamity, creates a type of history in our lives. And so over time we expect the bad things to happen again. For example, a person fights cancer over a period of time, has victory over it, and they might constantly be afraid of it coming back. Or a family member can be afraid for their loved one, and afraid of them dying.
Religious people will sometimes offer advice to just “let it go”, or that we need to trust more. That’s easier said than done, and can at times, seem judgmental.
I am no expert, but here are a few things I have learned battling this issue:
Talk to a friend or family member. Sometimes just talking about the issue can make a world of difference. You don’t always need advice, just someone that will listen.
If possible, spend time away from the circumstance. If you can’t, then focus your mind on something else, for instance watching a funny movie. For me, I like adventure, and science fiction movies.
Concentrate on your health, Go for walks and exercise. Eat more high quality food, do yoga, whatever you think would be helpful. You’d be surprised, how taking control of this one area of your life, can make a huge difference, and help you feel better.
If you need to, seek a professional counselor. Do not hesitate to ask for help, when you need it. This is so important! There is no shame or weakness in this, and you are always stronger when you make the right decision. They can sometimes help to break patterns in our thinking, that are fear based.
Keep fighting! Never give up!
I wish you peace.
