The Rhythm

Maine and More 182

The sea never really did learn to listen

beckoning us instead to quiet ourselves

to listen to the rhythm, and the wildness

that cannot be tamed. It was

the endless, the far corners pushed

to the limits, teaching us there is an adventure

that we can be free on the waves,

with our spirits wandering

trusting, in not only what we know

but taking it in and listening

to the rhythym

of the sea.

A heartbeat.

Organic Farming

Vacation 990

They’ve always known a little bit more

than we do, that food does not come from chemicals

that food comes from soil, and rain

with sun. They’ve known we need to be

connected to the earth so we can survive,

that we need each other, each one

having value,

a solid and dependable

philosophy,

producing life.

As the Sun Rises

Home 2014 239

As the sun rises I will be ready

huddled in layers armed with a camera

waiting for, expecting the glistening, the sparkling

as glimpses of shadows hover, then dissipate

the brilliance of the snow, never doubting

we would live to see another day.

It is magnificent.

More Human

Winter Snow 016

Something takes place in us when it snows,

we wave more, smile at the neighbors

as if to say, we have survived this

together. We help each other dig,

checking on the elderly, talking more.

More time with our families

giving us strength,

and we become so alive,

in the deep snow,

a community now

baking cookies,

seeing each other

as more human

making us smile.

It is good.

Wholeness

Winter Snow 022

When I think of the word Shalom

I think of more than just peace

more than the ceasing of war,

I think of a sense of wholeness

of wellbeing, of have been made

one. It’s true our world needs healing

but I’m also praying the ice melts soon

that we return to our right minds,

realizing the importance

of wholeness.

From the Beginning

Winter Snow 017

It seems like I have always loved you

from the beginning, when time was made

the creation of snow and fire,

through the heavens and beyond, our love

living but softer now, a gentle blanket covering,

falling on us like a silent snow awakening.

Knowing each other, we see the beginning

and the end, our souls alive and visible

so may our embers always burn steady

while our love still covers us

like a gentle snow, until

it is our time

to depart.

We will still love

each other

but in

eternity.

After the Storm

Home 2014 216

In the midst of the storm we receive a new calling

in spite of the ice, in spite of our hatred for the pain

surviving the winds of a hurricane, can teach us

that it’s not about the storm, but it’s about the living

with the occasional bleed, and that all of us are survivors

living through the storm, even when we do not feel

any stronger. We learn to live through

another night, realizing there is green

under the ice, and then we grow

in our compassion, in spite

of the wind of a hurricane.

We are all survivors.
