The Hopeful Sage

Mountains and Rivers 424

The ancient sage finished reading the scroll, and rolled it carefully back into place, tying it together with a sacred bind. An angel scoffed nearby, as the sage carefully placed the scroll back on the shelf. “You know it gets worse, before it gets better”, the angel said with some disdain in his voice.

As the old sage looked out one of the windows of heaven, he was thoughtful, stroking his long white beard. He had seen through the portals of time, a gift really to see at least some of the past, and into the future. He said quietly to the angel, “Yes but even today, there are still millions of people helping…….(his eyes were beginning to tear up now) helping to make the world a better place…..”

He turned once again to look out the window, and through time. A smile began, and grew on his face. The angel rebuffed, left the old sage quietly, realizing there was wisdom here he did not understand.

To this day, the old sage looks out over the earth, forever hopeful.
