Flag Waving

Maine and More 232

I love my country. Most of us do, unless we live under a dictatorship. We have so many freedoms here, including the freedom to worship the way we choose, or to choose not to worship at all. Regardless of where we live, our country is a part of who we are. However, I have two big concerns about the United States.

The first concern I have is prejudice. I am shocked, horrified, and disgusted. Hatred towards any group of people is wrong. I simply can’t believe that in 2015 we have such a horrible problem. Do we really have the right to criticize other nations, when we have such hatred in our own backyard?

Secondly, I am concerned about the lack of compassion here. There is simply not enough, of caring about people. I thank God for government programs to help people. Many people hate the idea of paying more taxes. If it was your mother in the nursing home, or if your wife needed an operation and couldn’t afford it, would you be so concerned about taxes? Of course not. I’m sure that a lack of compassion has happened over a period of time, but we need to reverse this trend. Maybe it’s from focusing on our hand held devices and TV, so often, that we’ve forgotten people are people.

Still, it’s ok to love your country, and to do some flag waving. Maybe we can do so, keeping in mind where we need to change, and work towards making our world a better place.

Peace.

Insight

Mountains and Rivers 149

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Albert Einstein

What is it about nature that helps us to understand? I think it is the peace of mind, and the healing we receive from spending time in nature. When we are restored, and refreshed, we can see more clearly.

Restoration through nature helps us to see the connection between us and the rest of the world. We suddenly fit, and we feel like we do belong. We also gain an understanding, that other people fit, and they belong too. In this way, nature actually teaches us compassion. We begin to care, because of the insight, that we are all connected to each other. That’s what I think Einstein was trying to say in this quote. The more deeply we look into nature, the more we understand.

Peace.

Taller than the Trees

Mountains and Rivers 384

I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees.

Henry David Thoreau

So having walked in the woods, we realize we are nurtured, but what does Thoreau mean by this? How can we be taller than the trees, and what does that mean? I believe there is a twofold answer. First, the person that has received from nature, by being in it, is strengthened. He/she has a clear mind, and peace is dwelling inside. These important elements bring strength to a person. We can walk taller, because we have the confidence we need. There is no need to be afraid, we are able to let go of anger, or any hindrance, to our internal life.

Secondly, the person that has been in the woods, can see the big picture now. The problems that did seem big, are not nearly as big as they thought. Ever hear the expression “You can’t see the forest because of the trees”? In nature this is reversed. We can see the forest now, because our spirit has grown, and we can see more clearly. We are above the trees. We can have a long distance vision.

Using the illustration again of a mother, do you remember your Mama helping you when you were little and you were injured? Maybe you were stung by a bee, or fell off your bike. What did she do? She held you, spoke gently to you, cleaned your wounds, and eased your pain. Nature can do that. We wipe our tears,  we keep walking the path, and we realize we are made stronger and more confident than ever. Peace.

A Quote about Compassion

Mountains and Rivers 394

“The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.”

Albert Schweitzer

There is a river that runs through the heart…… Allow compassion to flow through you, and to touch the lives of others, and you will be able to do amazing things! One life can truly make a difference. You are that life!

Thoughts about Anger

rain quote

Rumi is right of course. Have you ever had a debate with someone, maybe even a family member, and you started getting angry in the middle of it? Your voice started going up, and before you knew it you were yelling. How did the conversation go after that? Was it productive? We all get angry, we’re human. Sometimes we can’t help it and we know the other person is wrong!

I think what Rumi is saying here is that the gentle response will always be the best response. Not much will be accomplished by our loud noises. In a debate or argument, the other person will tend to tune us out, if all we are doing is yelling. We can get our point across in a much more effective way, if we speak with calm authority.

I don’t think Rumi was addressing fighting against social injustice, but even then, this principle can be applied. A collective voice of people can do a lot more good than rioting and looting. I’m thinking here of the peaceful protests, like during the days of Dr. Martin Luther King. We need to fight against wrongs done to people, but in a peaceful way.

Many of us enjoy, the wonder and beauty of a gentle rain. We even write poems about it. But very few, if any of us, enjoy hearing the thunder. Where is the beauty in anger?

Thoughts on Overcoming Fear

courage

head

fear notI once knew of a man that was terribly afraid his wife would die. And she almost did die, in several different ways. Nobody really knew or understood what they went through. She had severe health problems over a period of years. It took him a long time to understand how this affected him. Two things happened that taught him lessons. One was that she did get better, and through this, he learned to trust in God. It wasn’t easy. Secondly, he learned how to fight. Sometimes it’s a horrible battle, but everyday he fights and everyday he wins!

Keep fighting! You can do this!

The People of Nepal

This is a beautiful piece of film! It is incredibly positive. When I saw the beautiful people and culture of Nepal in this piece, I wanted to share it with you. This was taken years ago, and shows the people smiling and playing music. I also love this because it shows musicians coming from the west, to find a commonality in their music and cultures. You will hear Appalachian music, and you will see the sharing of culture. Awesome! This a trailer for a music project for mountain music. Check it out when you have a chance.

Some quick facts about Nepal: It is the 93rd largest country, in the way of land mass, in the world. It has the 47th largest population in the world, and has more than 27 million people. I had no idea! More than 81% of the people are Hindu, and about 9% are Buddhist. This means that Nepal has the largest percentage of Hindus of any country in the world. However many of the people consider themselves both Hindu and Buddhist. Nepal also has smaller numbers of Muslims, Christians, and other religions.

Please remember to pray for our brothers and sisters in Nepal. They truly are a beautiful people.

 Blessings to everyone and PEACE!
