Even After All These Years

20180707_155445

I said to My Love, I don’t feel very handsome anymore,

she looked at me, smiling

with that twinkle in her eye

and said, “You’re still

the man of my dreams…..

did you know that?”

My Love.

Note: My wife and I have been married for more than 30 years now. Yay!

At the Church in the Harbor

100_1681

It was the same each week. She mainly went to church now to see him, even though he had been gone for such a long time. The fog in her aged mind was always hopeful though that somehow, in some way, she would see him there. She even sat in the same pew each week in hopes he would find her easily.

She was so tired lately, she usually feel asleep during the homily. Sometimes her head slumped over, onto her nurse’s shoulder. She tried not to snore, and she would wake herself up when she heard the noise.

Then there was one Sunday, she did wake up because she could feel his presence. She knew it was him, even before she looked. After all, when you’ve been married for 45 years you get to know a person’s spirit.

She turned to her left and there he was, at least part of him was. His spirit had a gray shape, but it was him for sure. He smiled at her.

The strange thing was, even though he didn’t quite have a body, she could see his one tooth was still missing – there on the left.

He took her hand now. And they began floating near the ceiling of the church, and suddenly they entered the most beautiful, and brilliant light she had ever seen.

And she felt great peace as they ascended, because he was still by her side.

Pages

You read my open book,

and did not reject it’s pages,

you embraced the ink, the smudges,

along with the exclamation points,

rough sentences, and handsome metaphors,

always hoping the love story would never end.

You became my poetry, my muse,

never hidden, filling me with wonder,

giving my mouth and pen the words,

so we can both live, beyond the stars,

in the greatest of all stories.

My Love.

“When we love people, we give them hope.”

Two Kingdoms

Mountains and Rivers 067

Our two kingdoms collapsed,

into each other’s arms,

tearing down our walls, trusting,

when you released your royalty,

and I let go of my shield,

we were begging, pleading,

just to look into each other’s eyes,

as the fires of war blazed,

around us, never reaching our souls,

we were too wounded to breathe,

but alive in the sun,

warriors never give up on love,

and that is how we began.

Two kingdoms into one.

Contemplation

Maine and More 551

When we were young,

the leaves were beginning to turn,

on our wedding day,

our love was orange quickly,

turning to red,

we were breathing deeply,

learning about air.

Now that we are older,

our love is softer,

but deeper, and the leaves,

turning to a rich golden,

brown.

Even if they do fall,

our love will not end,

living,

growing instead,

as tall as an uncut cedar,

while the snow speaks softly,

whispering approval,

the wind caressing our limbs,

as we look up,

into the warm,

winter sun.

Love after 65

Mountains and Rivers 131

She helped him out of the bus, when they got close to the hospital. Shaky legs, down the steps, holding her hand. He was limping with a cane, as they crossed the street to the doctor’s office. He had some blood tests, and got some new medication, to live a little longer. He was often dizzy, and got confused sometimes.

After a bus ride back home, they had some frozen dinners, heated in the microwave. She was done with cooking, and he didn’t mind. He was grateful just to be with her. After dinner he went to the freezer and got out the ice cream (his had no sugar). When they sat down in front of the TV, he looked at her and said, “I may get confused, but I know who you are……..and that I will always love you.” She got tears in her eyes, but her wrinkled face was beaming.

She said, “Eat your ice cream old man, cause when you’re done……I’m going to kiss your face!” Now it was his turn to smile, because that is exactly what he was hoping for.

They watched their favorite TV show that night, a British program called, As Time Goes By.

When it Rains

Maine and More 204

When it rains we can hide,

under the covers,

snuggling down,

warm and safe,

listening,

to the rain,

to our heartbeats,

you tell me your secrets,

and I’ll tell you mine,

whispering in the thunder.

I love your face.
