What a wonderful poet she was! She was American born, and had a way of looking inward, at the heart, and the soul. When she did look inward she often found gold, and shared that great beauty with us.

To be honest this is probably the most beautiful way to describe hope, that I have ever heard. Hope within us has wings, which means it is alive. The illustration here is that it is like a bird, living and dwelling, even if it is on a temporary perch. I am stunned with the line, “sings the tune without words”. In other words we don’t know, or understand how deep this wonderful hope goes. It is so deep, one cannot describe it, it is beyond words.

And it is ongoing. It never ends, because it is alive within the person, and perhaps beyond. I find these words so beautiful, and fulfilling, I wonder if I should write anything about them at all. But I wanted to share their great beauty with you.

The 1980’s

Oceans 2076

A Prose Poem

She never wanted to get married, never wanted to be committed. Not a wild life, but choosing to live, wanting to be safe. A church sometimes. The nightmare of her childhood, was gone now, but still lingering in the shadows. Me, I never knew love, until the Chinese food, and talking in the parking lot. I was seeking solutions outside. Not quite a monastery, but the meditation of loneliness. Carrying wounds from my parents. Where is the love?

We were two hearts, running into each other, bleeding on each other, but that was ok.

We paid for our own wedding, our fathers were invisible, mine didn’t want my hands in her Afro. She was still running from pain when she came down the aisle, but I had my arms ready. We were both safe. The most beautiful moments in our lives, two lost souls exchanging rings. Candles were burning in our hearts now. Later, fireworks, and healing from the heat. I wanted her body and soul.

There was a God. There had to be, with this kind of love. Burning, we were converted. And now, some wounds here and there, but smaller, and nothing we can’t handle. Rocks thrown at us, but we are still alive. And still talking in the parking lot, eating Chinese food. Looking into the face, of healing.

Acceptance

Oceans 183

In the oceans of our opinions,

in the stormy seas of our rhetoric,

there is never any healing,

for those stranded at sea,

for those with sails burning,

the horizon is lost.

The hurting don’t need,

an email, some policy,

from distant talking heads,

they need a live person,

a human being,

to say to them, you matter,

that you have value,

that they you are loved and,

accepted.

Everyone should be welcomed in our ships,

where the sails,

have been restored,

and the horizon shines,

brightly with hope.

Loneliness

Loneliness is a bike,

without a rider,

a backpack,

with only one sandwich,

and a writer,

without a story,

looking to the sky,

calling for characters,

to be born again.

The Beauty of a Sunday

A Prose Poem

The problem with getting older, is that you’ve heard every sermon, or you think you have.

I didn’t learn faith in a church, the woods taught me, when I was young, showed me there was something greater. I saw the church filled with people, but their hearts were not still.

Later, the wooden benches were hard, difficult sermons, long sermons, with harsh words. Railing against the Pope, or President Obama. I was confused, and my heart grew sick.

Healing for me came, in the stained glass, the space. Certainly in the peace, and in the beauty of faith. Now the sermons are shorter, and the words are decorated with love. His presence. What can we give to others?

All of this reminding me of the creation, the woods, the rivers, the mountains, and the beauty of life.

My heart is full now, and contented.

And in the late afternoon, Sundays were made, for napping.

Cars

Oceans 1351

I like cars especially,

the old ones,

but I know a man,

that spent $800 a month,

for his car payment, and $200

a month, for gasoline,

not including,

his insurance,

and maintenance costs.

Do you realize how many children,

that would feed?

Have we lost our minds?

The Boat Ride

Maine and More 317

A Prose Poem

It was the boat ride that first brought the glimpse. It was a clear day with the sun, and the wind tossed the waves. The boat was magnificent, refusing to yield. As she looked at the sky and the water, something took place, something was there, but she didn’t know what it was. The sun was reflecting on the water, but that wasn’t it. Her love was at her side, and they held hands, but that wasn’t it either.

She stared beyond the waves. Dolphins played, and followed the boat. It was then that she knew! Maybe it was their joy, jumping and leaping. Their fun was contagious. It was like talking to an old friend and not remembering their name. The old friend started speaking again, but she hesitated. Should she let him in again? She remembered the pain and the needles, being burnt on the inside. She decided to try one more time.

The sun burst into her heart, as she opened it. Her frail and thin body shook with tears. The old friend was hope, and he came to live again. She came to live again, refusing to yield. The cancer might take her body, but she would always live, from now on, in the hope, and in the light. Death would not control her. And the dolphins jumped for joy.
