A Quote from Helen Keller

Canada and More 085

No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an unchartered land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.

Helen Keller

Helen Keller is truly one of the greatest heroes of human history. Her courage of overcoming such incredible limitations, of not being able to hear, or speak, is nothing short of inspirational. She had to learn how to communicate, from a very young age, and yet she became a prolific author, and world famous speaker. She was an advocate for people with disabilities, for working people, and for women’s rights.

In this quote we can see so much of her courageous, and positive spirit. Keller’s view was that people are limited by being negative. You cannot accomplish something, unless you believe that you can. In her view, being an optimist is what enables us, or gives us the strength and power, to discover the mysteries of the heavens, the uncharted seas, and most of all the opening of opportunities for the human spirit.

Her words here, are meant to provoke us to think about how we approach life, and our attitude. She is also showing us how unlimited we can be, and that we too can accomplish great things! Let us think of her as an example, of overcoming our own obstacles.

I wish you peace!

A Quote by Robert Frost on Greatness

Mountains and Rivers 157

There never was any heart truly great and generous, that was not also tender and compassionate.

Robert Frost

I love the poetry of Robert Frost, and this quote gives us yet another look, into the heart and thinking of the poet. There have been many great people of history, but all too often, the people that were called great, were people of war, or that loved war. I love this quote, because I think Frost was saying true greatness is connected to generosity, and that this greatness and generosity, come from, or come out of, a heart of tenderness and compassion.

And let’s not forget that there is a huge difference between weakness and compassion. In fact, a person that is compassionate is incredibly strong. There is nothing more powerful on earth, than love. It takes great strength to forgive someone that hates you. To have tenderness, and compassion for that same person, takes amazing strength, and is one of the most important battles you will ever face.

Never let hatred rule over you. Break the throne of hatred, by responding in the opposite way, with tenderness, and compassion. That is what true greatness is all about.

Peace.

Two Quotes on Education

Mountains and Rivers 139

“An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”

Ben Franklin

“Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Martin Luther King Jr.

There are so many good quotes on education but these are two of my favorites.

In the quote by Ben Franklin, he had a long term vision in mind. What we invest now, we will reap in the future. He also realized that education pays better than any investment we can possibly make. We are investing in our children! One of my problems with conservative politicians, is that their concerns over higher taxes often seems short sighted. If all I care about is my wallet right now, then my investment in the future will be very small, or non-existent. We need to see the big picture, and have a long term vision, like Ben Franklin did.

In the quote from Dr. King, he realized that learning numbers, chemical reactions, and languages, are all extremely important, but that there should be more, or something that goes beyond intelligence. Our children need to learn how to have compassion for others, how to respect people, and how to have integrity. It’s true, that much of this type of learning goes beyond the classroom, and we as parents have a huge part to play in this.

Let’s invest in a good education. The future of our children, and our world, depends on it.

Education is the bridge to the future.

Deeper in the Heart by Rumi

Oceans 164

“As you live deeper in the heart, the mirror gets clearer and cleaner.”

Rumi

This quote is rich, and deep with meaning. First, I think Rumi is letting us know that we need to go deeper internally, but he is also saying we need to dwell there on a regular basis, or live there. This is not a vacation where we visit a few days and we go back to the place we were. It is a matter of living in the heart, as a way of life, daily.

But what does he mean by living in the heart? Is it only a matter of how we think? I believe he means for us to be who we really are, not plastic or phony. We also need to remember that Rumi was deeply religious, so for him, I believe he was concerned about honesty, and having faith in God. He was also very much aware of the power of love. So for Rumi, I believe he was saying we should go deeper, discovering who we are, allowing faith to grow strong, and being filled with love.

When we go deeper, and live in our hearts, we can see ourselves better. We can understand ourselves, and the world around us more clearly. We can have a clear vision for the future. We see ourselves for who we really are.

Peace.

A Quote on Humility

Maine and More 153

There’s a thin line between confidence and arrogance….it’s called humility. Confidence smiles. Arrogance smirks.

Author Unknown

Some people think that humility is a sign of weakness. Nothing could be further from the truth! Confidence simply means we know who we are, we know what we’re doing, and we are going to remain positive no matter the outcome.

Humility does not mean we walk around depressed, with our head hanging low! No way. However, humility does keep us from becoming arrogant. Arrogance is the bad type of pride that makes us think we are better than other people. It can cause divisions, and hurt other people, without even caring that pain has been inflicted.

So I think the author is saying that having humility is important in order for us to have balance. Smirking is no good, because our heart is not right, and it causes pain. Smiling is very good, because it tells other people, you still care, but you know who you are. You are a positive person!

Have a great week!

Peace.

The Good Ground by Rumi

Mountains and Rivers 052

“Very little grows on jagged rock. Be grounded.

Be crumbled so wildflowers will come up where you are.”

Rumi

In this quote, Rumi is sharing about more than just wildflowers. He is using this illustration to point to a truth about our lives, and more specifically, about our internal lives. When our lives, and yes our hearts, are like stone or rocks, not much is going to grow. It is difficult to be fruitful. Another way of saying this is, that there is a blockage between us and potential growth.

Our lives need to be based in ground that can produce, in his words here “crumbled” means easy to plant, or just naturally loose, rich soil, which allows plants to grow. This is why farmers plow their fields, and gardeners like myself, till the soil before we plant. This allows the plants, even wild ones, (and weeds) to grow much easier. In a very real sense, our soils needs to be loose, not hard as a rock.

When our lives are like that, beautiful things will grow from us, even when we don’t expect it. Wildflowers are spontaneous, surprising, and intensely beautiful. We can be like that too, we just need to take care of the soil.

Peace.

Thoughts About Love

Oceans 2215

“Good relationships don’t just happen. They take time, patience, and two people who truly want to be together.”

Author Unknown

We all love, love. Love is our lifeblood, and helps us to make sense of this crazy world. It’s no wonder that love is the most talked about, and most written about topic. I believe there is love at first sight, but regardless of the relationship, love takes work as well. We need to invest ourselves, our time, our hearts, into the other person. We need to see them as more important than we are. It’s a matter of giving, the giving of a wonderful gift – ourselves. Hopefully the other person does the same thing, and if not the relationship begins to fall apart.

We know there is the physical part of love. We were designed that way! How boring life would be without it. In addition to the fireworks, we do need to have a sense of commitment to the other person. Life can be tough sometimes. It is during those tough times, that love can come shining through the storm, or like the sun burning away the fog. If we want to walk away, when our love gets sick, then that’s not love. It might be something else instead of love. The two of us need to face the battle together. When we do, love grows even stronger. Difficulties are opportunities, to draw close, and to work as a team. If two people are committed, love can grow even stronger over time. That’s why seeing two old people, still in love, is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

Peace.
