A Few Thoughts on Writing Fiction

beauty allswomenstalk

Fiction is a hard sell. In other words, poetry, photography, and art, are going to do much better in the blogging world, than a piece of fiction, but there is a simple, and wonderful reason for that. There are so many incredible blogs, with such outstanding work, that we long to take it all in. So if you do like I do, I go through the reader, just amazed, and I go on to the next post quickly.

Fiction takes a lot of time to read, and when we post it, we are asking the reader to invest time in us, and our work. So with that in mind, I try to keep my segments short. I would like them to be a little over four hundred words, but they always go over it. I cringe when I start hitting six hundred words, because I know I need to make it worth the investment the reader is making.

But I love, love, writing fiction. Several of you have asked me to continue with the Last People series, and that is a huge thrill for me. I am enjoying this series more than any other series I have written. The two main characters are so different from one another, and yet they love each other in amazing ways. I wanted it to be that way. It also gives me a wonderful opportunity to explore culture. If you’ve been following the blog for a while, you know how I love other cultures and people!

By the way, Robert and Belinda, from the Escape series, wanted me to tell you hello. They are still down in the Dominican Republic, and working on getting married. Don’t expect to get a postcard from them though, they are going to be busy!

Peace.

Loneliness

Oceans 2022

Loneliness is a bike,

without a rider,

a backpack,

with only one sandwich,

and a writer,

without a story,

looking to the sky,

calling for characters,

to be born again.

Her Wedding Day

Bride - Early 1900's

A Prose Poem

It was her wedding day, so yes, she could smile again. It was true that she was young and her husband was a little older, but he loved her deeply. He was kind and gentle, like the others of her tribe. Somehow, because of the terrible times of the past, they were all aware now of how important it was, to be loving. They longed for there to be peace, and love always.

It was a new day, the salmon were running again, and her husband was not only a good hunter, he had started working at the lumberyard. All the men said it had to do with the Great Chief in Washington, showing the first people respect. He loved the wilderness, and hunting so much, he placed great pieces of land aside, to protect it, and to keep it sacred. It was a good sign.

And here it was now, her time to be married. She looked forward to the future, and all that the Great Spirit had in mind. This picture was taken just after she had prayed for many strong children, and that she and her husband would love each other – always. She knew that it was good. It was very, very good.

No More Giants

Old Photos 128

Giants in gray uniforms,

don’t walk these beaches anymore,

no military boots, with swords,

calling for slavery, still there are shadows,

that linger in the hearts of some,

waiting to be released,

waiting to inject,

with hatred.

They are losing every day,

as love grows strong,

and respect for people,

love will win,

love always wins,

just too slowly sometimes.

We just need a few more,

shepherd boys, and girls,

men and women with slingshots,

ready to fight, and take down,

the Goliath of prejudice.

We will win.

This is our beach now,

this is our land.

Writing Love Stories

Maine and More 207

So how does a guy write love stories? Very carefully! As writers we constantly make decisions about what we write, sometimes without realizing it. With love though, I need to evaluate as I go along, and then look back at the work when it is done. This is true of love poetry as well.

With writing love poems, and stories, I often question how much spice to put in the mix. You can’t write about love without something, such as an embrace, a smile, or kissing? Not enough spice and the story becomes naïve and too boring. Too much spice, and at some point we cross the line, even if we are the ones, making the line. But who decides? We each do.

How do I decide? First, I want to be consistent with who I am as a person, which does not mean I think I’m better than anyone. Far from it! This means I might take out a word or change it. Deleting a line is not uncommon.

I also respect the one I married, and I consider what she might say about it. Will she giggle, and give me a warm smile? Or will she be angry? She has not been angry yet, (Yay!) and sometimes writing love poems really is a blessing to her! (and me) I write out of my inspiration, and think about the one the Creator has given me. I call her “My Love”.

My intent is to stay in a certain range. If you compare my writing to movie ratings, I will be staying in the PG range, maybe less, and not much more. Love is very good thing, and another wonderful fountain of life!

If you haven’t guessed I’m writing several books!

Life is good.

Peace.

The Waterfall

Mountains and Rivers 394

Where is my waterfall?

my soul made of sand,

searches,

with cactus bleeding.

Is there no relief?

no refreshing for me?

are You hiding,

behind the veil?

Your light is barely seen,

in the early morning, summer fog.

Do You hear me when I call out?

Then He said,

My son,

You have always had a waterfall,

you just didn’t believe it,

stretch out your hands,

and be refreshed.

Be at peace now.

Peace to everyone.

The Poetry of Gibran – Work

cambodians

Then the ploughman said, Speak to us of Work,

And he answered, saying:

You work that you may keep pace with the earth, and the soul of the earth,

For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the seasons, and to step out of life’s procession, that marches in majesty and proud submission towards the infinite.

When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music.

Which of you would be a reed, dumb and silent, when all else sings together in unison?

Always you have been told that work is a curse and a labour of misfortune.

But I say to you that when you work you fulfill a part of earth’s furthest dream, assigned to you when that dream was born,

And in keeping yourself with labour you are in truth loving life,

And to love life through labour is to be intimate with life’s inmost secret.

From the Prophet by Kahlil Gibran pp. 25-26.

The Song of Hope

green hills

When I look out, over the mountains,

I can see the help coming,

and the wind singing, tells me,

is there any place He cannot reach?

is there any place He did not make?

Hope is everywhere,

still I doubt, can I trust that much?

The heart begins to listen, to the leaves,

singing praises,

and that He does care.

I remember the ancient saying,

and I lift up my eyes,

hoping and praying that He will hear,

my heart beating.

Then I realize,

all I ever needed,

was a song.

When the Dawn Breaks

sunrise with blue

When the dawn breaks,

I hope to understand the reasons,

for the darkness,

some say we can learn and grow,

but how can life come from the terrible things?

from the wounds?

As the light breaks,

the back of darkness,

blue is born, and yellow and orange,

color returns to my soul,

the dark has no hold on me now,

a faded memory,

the sky smiles,

and says, “darkness?”

“what darkness?”

The light encourages,

strengthens,

and says, I can go on,

with faith,

darkness mumbles in defeat.

I can’t know the reasons,

of why, why the pain,

but I can see the darkness as small,

and powerless,

the light, as great,

and knowing all,

today, right now,

when the dawn breaks.

Blessings to everyone and PEACE!

Do Something

Ever wonder why there is so much suffering in the world? There are no easy answers, but each problem is a unique opportunity for us to come together, and do something about it. Part of the solution is looking at us in the mirror. Here’s a song about it.

One life can truly make a difference!

Blessings to everyone and PEACE!
