The 1980’s

Oceans 2076

A Prose Poem

She never wanted to get married, never wanted to be committed. Not a wild life, but choosing to live, wanting to be safe. A church sometimes. The nightmare of her childhood, was gone now, but still lingering in the shadows. Me, I never knew love, until the Chinese food, and talking in the parking lot. I was seeking solutions outside. Not quite a monastery, but the meditation of loneliness. Carrying wounds from my parents. Where is the love?

We were two hearts, running into each other, bleeding on each other, but that was ok.

We paid for our own wedding, our fathers were invisible, mine didn’t want my hands in her Afro. She was still running from pain when she came down the aisle, but I had my arms ready. We were both safe. The most beautiful moments in our lives, two lost souls exchanging rings. Candles were burning in our hearts now. Later, fireworks, and healing from the heat. I wanted her body and soul.

There was a God. There had to be, with this kind of love. Burning, we were converted. And now, some wounds here and there, but smaller, and nothing we can’t handle. Rocks thrown at us, but we are still alive. And still talking in the parking lot, eating Chinese food. Looking into the face, of healing.

Peace.

In the Corners of My Mind

Oceans 1853

In the corners of my mind,

there is a cabin,

tucked away in the forest,

where you and I are relaxing,

with some good books,

next to a soft fire, keeping us,

warm,

clean sheets,

and quilts, on the bed,

some eggs cooking,

a frying pan,

I can smell them cooking,

with butter.

Sometimes, it is snowing outside,

when it’s warm enough,

we go for long walks,

surrounded by the eternity,

of the woods, stability,

bringing comfort.

Inside, a kiss,

just below your ear,

whispers of love,

as we stir the fire.

In the corners of my mind,

there is always you,

always,

your presence,

in my mind,

in my heart, and my life,

you make life worth living.

To the One I Love

Mountains and Rivers 433

There are so many reasons I have,

to hold you in my heart,

in my arms,

it’s not just what you bring,

to the table,

or what you give,

it’s who you are.

You are my eyes when I can’t see,

my heart of compassion,

for others, you taught me,

to care,

to breathe blessings,

living in the forgiving,

to have a heart that makes sense,

and to not let go.

What can I give you in return?

ten thousand roses?

No, I have only one thing I can give,

Myself.

Everything that I am, my faithfulness,

everything that I have,

my heart, and love,

belongs to you only,

I give you myself.

we give each other,

the greatest of gifts,

each other.

Candles

two candles from indianpublicmedia

All you really wanted, was some time,

I came home after days of working,

and what did I say,

after kissing your cheek?

“I have to write this story”,

“I haven’t blogged all day”, I said.

“I’ll just be 30 minutes”, I said.

Two hours later, I was still at the table,

writing my heart out,

while you had gone to the bedroom,

to light candles,

waiting.

We were supposed to watch a movie,

or that British mystery series,

but I felt stupid,

when I saw the candles.

The fire had gone out.

Later we were next to each other,

in bed, alone,

back to back.

You were wondering,

about my heart,

I was dreaming of ways,

to make it up,

a dinner out? the Greek place?

roses.

All you really wanted was some time.

Please forgive me.

I need to live it,

instead,

of just writing about it.

In August

Maine and More 054

In August I think of the park,

by the lake, with the picnic table,

I was your knight on one knee,

humbled by your love,

my queen.

It was a royal season,

victories won without banners,

scars erased, swords put away,

winning purple velvet,

throwing away burlap.

For the first time,

we trusted,

gold and silver,

came to the surface,

we never knew,

what love was, until,

we discovered the safety,

of each other.

It began in August,

in the park, by the lake.

On the Deck

Maine and More 300

As we ride the waves,

further off the coast,

the horizon of infinity,

seems closer.

What is it about the ocean,

that makes us cry?

Your eyes filled with tears,

ready to launch,

as my heart sinks,

looking at your face,

I realize, I was wrong,

like I often am.

Tossed,

as the boat picks up speed,

I want to break my own heart,

can I reach out?

will you pull back?

I risk a kiss,

on your forehead,

as we hold on to the railing,

the words come out softly,

will you forgive me?

I’m sorry I was angry.

You hesitate,

and risk everything, accepting my embrace,

as the sky meets the ocean,

we are one again,

falling into each other’s arms,

healed,

through forgiveness.

The View from Our Window

Maine and More 255

Tonight more than any other night,

let’s sit by the window,

so we can take in,

the water, the coastline.

I will always remember Maine,

hiding in our bungalow,

your face reflecting the sun.

Is roast beef ok?

Lost, staring at each other,

remembering the single rose,

on our first date,

I hand you another one.

Hearts melting,

I take your hand in mine,

and bring it to my face,

tears streaming,

flooded with love for you.

I guess the roast beef can wait,

as we close the curtains,

and pull down the shades,

our lips find each other.

Happy Anniversary sweetheart,

you know I love you,

tears and kisses blending,

My Love.

Note: This is about an anniversary celebration from years past. It’s not our anniversary today, but sometimes I do look back on this.

Blessings to everyone and peace!
