The Beauty of a Sunday

Oceans 993

A Prose Poem

The problem with getting older, is that you’ve heard every sermon, or you think you have.

I didn’t learn faith in a church, the woods taught me, when I was young, showed me there was something greater. I saw the church filled with people, but their hearts were not still.

Later, the wooden benches were hard, difficult sermons, long sermons, with harsh words. Railing against the Pope, or President Obama. I was confused, and my heart grew sick.

Healing for me came, in the stained glass, the space. Certainly in the peace, and in the beauty of faith. Now the sermons are shorter, and the words are decorated with love. His presence. What can we give to others?

All of this reminding me of the creation, the woods, the rivers, the mountains, and the beauty of life.

My heart is full now, and contented.

And in the late afternoon, Sundays were made, for napping.

Corn

Vacation 691

There was always corn,

He created it,

coming up, out of the ground,

growing,

like the first people,

flourishing.

Kernels tucked in green,

food,

for us and the animals,

but now,

after spraying, modifying,

and engineering,

is it still food?

What have we done?

The Reluctant Warrior

Oceans 2031

No one ever told him,

he would need the mountains,

the wholeness and healing,

of peace,

the Creator breathing.

No one ever told him,

there would be explosions,

tearing the sky,

battles raging, bloodied swords,

his Queen imploding.

He fights on,

only because he has to,

he would rather live in a tree,

sleep on some rocks,

while the sky is healed, by clean water.

He picks up his sword anyway,

the shield,

armed with words,

and a clean heart,

he fights.

No turning back,

no confession of cowards,

He will live, in the mountains,

because the mountains live,

in him.

In the Corners of My Mind

Oceans 1853

In the corners of my mind,

there is a cabin,

tucked away in the forest,

where you and I are relaxing,

with some good books,

next to a soft fire, keeping us,

warm,

clean sheets,

and quilts, on the bed,

some eggs cooking,

a frying pan,

I can smell them cooking,

with butter.

Sometimes, it is snowing outside,

when it’s warm enough,

we go for long walks,

surrounded by the eternity,

of the woods, stability,

bringing comfort.

Inside, a kiss,

just below your ear,

whispers of love,

as we stir the fire.

In the corners of my mind,

there is always you,

always,

your presence,

in my mind,

in my heart, and my life,

you make life worth living.

Fruit

Maine and More 082

When fruit grows in the fields,

it is a sign,

of healing,

of seasons cycling,

freedom,

in the natural,

it is a sign,

that we were created,

that we are loved,

and fed,

that long after, we are gone,

the earth will still renew,

growing life,

in spite of death,

there are always seeds,

to take back time,

new,

eternity growing,

in a watermelon.

Found

Mountains and Rivers 399

A lost soul can be found,

in the darkness, the dampness,

the nurturing womb,

of the deep woods,

in the high country.

Mother earth protecting the lonely,

giving her child,

streams to nourish,

strength, and comfort,

with soft words,

to the broken,

seeking refuge,

from harsh motors,

driven, by lunatics,

and politicians.

They say nothing is perfect,

but that’s only partially true,

the woods taught, long ago,

the first people,

right from wrong,

and if they ever got lost,

they knew how to be,

found.

The Invitation

Old Photos 001

In the beginning the two,

wounded souls, became one,

looking for paradise,

finding each other, finding ourselves,

wrapped with each other’s arms,

every hurt dealt with,

every scar vanquished,

every negative energy,

conquered.

Love gave us permission to have,

soothing sleep,

I said yes, and you stopped hiding,

we both grew wings.

We turned,

and saw for the first time,

there was more,

than rocks and stone,

compassion came, and a gentle spirit,

was priceless.

With time, love gave an invitation,

opening, our minds,

to the One who made us.

Only He could make something,

so beautiful,

love opened the door,

to more.

First Fridays – A Psalm

Psalm 42: 1-5

As the deer pants for streams of water,

so my soul pants for you, O God.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

When can I go and meet with God?

My tears have been my food day and night,

while men say to me all day long,

“Where is your God?”

These things I remember

as I pour out my soul:

how I used to go with the multitude,

leading the procession to the house of God,

with shouts of joy and thanksgiving

among the festive throng.

Why are you downcast, O my soul?

Why so disturbed within me?

Put your hope in God,

for I will yet praise him,

my Savior and my God.

Here the Psalmist expresses to us how he is searching for hope. He is going through a very tough time, or did just recently, and he is saying that he first needs to seek some solitude. He realizes, that he needs some light to break through. There is actually a dialogue going on within, as he examines his thoughts. More importantly he recognizes that he is struggling internally, and he acknowledges his pain, and his lack of trusting, the Almighty.

It wasn’t always like that. At one time he was filled with faith, and went to celebrate with everyone else. It seems as though he is remembering, what he used to be like, in order to encourage himself. His mind is saying, “Everything is going to be alright”, and yet his heart is having trouble believing it. This is expressed in the questions he asks. “Why are you downcast, O my soul?”

I’ve been there a time or two! The encouragement here, is don’t let problems in this life get you down. Keep going strong, keep looking up, and trust the Creator. He knows what you are going through.

Be blessed, have a great weekend!

Peace.

Stillness

Maine and More 078

When the river is quiet,

there’s a stillness in my spirit,

an assurance of calm,

that builds me,

lifting me, higher,

that says to me,

you know the way,

just walk,

clocks,

don’t matter here,

choose,

the path, you’ve been given.

Turtles, on the bottom,

stirring mud,

don’t fly very high,

watch the fish hawk instead,

and copy,

his courage.

Go deep,

and be filled,

never expecting darkness,

plow for the stillness,

when the river is quiet.

On the Lake

Maine and More 064

When I saw the water,

I thought about our time on the lake,

up before dawn, slipping into the water,

our paddles waking up the blue,

mist,

as the sun was coming up –

warm air, comforting,

hearing a loon surprised us,

a bull moose rustling and feasting,

on the shore,

we were drifting, floating,

my mind wandering through time,

when the earth was new and fresh,

a few campfires with the first people,

“Can we go back and get some breakfast?”

your question,

shattered my dream.

You were right – I turned to smile,

you blew me a kiss,

we laughed,

and paddled, as fast as we could,

yelling, racing, and laughing,

breaking the silence of the eco-system.

I made a joke about moose,

and you lost it — howling!

We laughed so hard the canoe tipped over,

next to the shore, water sparkling,

soaking wet, we held each other,

staring,

into the light of oceans,

I love you.
