The Windows of the Cafe

443

When God looks in on us,

through the windows of the café,

do you think He smiles?

Does He approve of us staring,

into each other’s eyes?

Is holding hands too much?

some would condemn us,

wag a finger, shake their head,

trying to clothe us, in condemnation,

remember that time some church people,

questioned us, for holding hands?

I don’t need to be 20,

I just want you to know,

how I feel.

I think He does approve,

as He looks at us,

through the windows,

of the café.

Scenes of Summer

Mountains and Rivers 230

I love the smell of the living green,

leaves in the breeze,

the warmth of the early morning sun,

hiking with you,

on the trails, pretending,

we are the only people left,

and the earth is reborn.

Adam and Eve?

a new beginning, in the woods,

the sky watching us,

looking at the veins of a leaf,

you can see the Creator.

Hours of talking, and walking,

sensing the earth,

and where we belong,

then hiding, in the cabin,

when it gets too warm,

eating a bowl of oatmeal,

with a side of fruit salad.

I love summer.

Clouds

Oceans 135

When I see the clouds,

parting for the sun, moving,

for the light,

I know that I am real,

head for reasoning,

walking farther, with lungs,

hearing with my heart,

beyond the mountains.

I know of a man,

who never knew love,

until he found her,

opening his eyes to the gold,

and the Creator.

And when he writes,

he pushes the clouds,

to the side, not listening,

when people laugh,

or critique his theology.

He will love anyway,

he will write to the sky,

and to her,

to see her smile again.

Two WIld Horses

Oceans 229

When I am with you,

my heart beats faster,

yet gentle strength walks,

into my soul, and into yours,

as we share the light.

No living science can explain,

the universe in your smile,

brightness of the sun,

the depth of the oceans,

in your eyes,

but I know, you feel the same,

as we linger here, on earth,

like wild horses ready,

our spirits stomping,

longing,

to run, their blood,

in our veins, the love,

stronger,

freedom cut loose,

like the spirit,

of two wild horses,

running,

with the wind.

Questions

Oceans 266

If I told You how I feel,

would You get angry?

I don’t want to be a seeker,

anymore,

I feel stupid sometimes,

looking for strength,

in the mountains, a river,

listening, understanding the song,

of the waves.

I need deeper roots,

stronger faith,

and more answers,

fewer questions,

more love,

living in the now,

instead of,

my head in the clouds.

As the waves began to sing,

He said, “My son,

keep trusting, keep writing,

keep reading the Book of Psalms,

just be who you are,

and who, you were meant to be.”

In Eternity

Oceans 1387

In eternity the colors are brighter,

than anything we can comprehend,

the lonely will be loved,

and the pain will be gone,

no more dying.

There will only be one judge,

instead of many,

to see how much we loved,

how much we helped,

other people.

Did we care?

or just preach our doctrine?

while people starved,

and waited,

for help that never came.

I love the mountains,

and my life here,

but people are what matter,

we were meant to be healing,

He said so,

go for the heartbeat,

with a hand,

of compassion.

I want to see the brightness,

of the colors,

with my brothers and sisters,

standing,

shoulder to shoulder,

thanking,

each other for the help,

we all needed,

caring,

about each other,

even though,

we were,

different colors.

Blooming

Mountains and Rivers 131

In the heat of the day,

the sun nourishes,

giving life to color,

and joy to people.

I can see the fields,

reminding me there is hope,

life goes on,

darkness does not last,

and there is strength,

in the beauty.

There will be another day,

under the nourishing sun.

The Exodus

Oceans 2029

A Story Poem About First Nations People

Stolen horses,

women robbed,

of everything, teeth knocked out,

young men buried,

under the firewater,

and anger.

The hearts of the people turned darker,

than burnt out logs,

without a spark,

barely living.

They slept with hope,

dreamt of the valley,

where the people were born,

where they could tell stories,

and be free.

So they left in the morning,

five Arapaho families,

quietly walking,

realizing they would be chased,

but they needed their home,

to grow teeth again,

to eat real food,

and to feel the love,

seeing the Creator living.

All they ever wanted,

was peace.

Summer Breeze

Mountains and Rivers 318

I will never forget,

our first time in the woods,

was He speaking to us?

summer breeze,

gently whispering,

in His presence,

we were bold,

to declare our love,

sitting on the bench,

chipmunks playing,

a blue jay interrupting us,

loud objections,

but sworn to secrecy,

in our holy moment,

of holding hands,

quiet hearts,

the silence of healing,

flooding with love,

as the summer breeze,

was gently whispering.

Calling

Oceans 2031

Seeking the highest rocks,

the deepest rivers, the trees,

answers without words,

oneness of spirit,

flowing.

But the curse of the seeker,

is loneliness,

wanting a heart called Lakota,

tied in with the heartbeat,

seeing cathedrals,

clouds for walking on.

Living in the valley he learns,

painful lessons,

and joy, with love,

always looking though,

to the west.

to the loneliness,

of the mountains.
