Within My Peace

20180930_130130

When readers come to my site what do they expect to see? Poetry mostly, or maybe a short story, but they are not really looking for political commentary. That’s not the way I designed this site.

And yet I feel things deeply, as many of us do, and much of what we see seems so wrong. How do we stop the madness?

Perhaps as artists and writers we are made internally to feel strongly and observe the insanity, so that we can articulate a response in a creative way.

And yet I hold back, firstly because of what I’ve mentioned. And secondly because I could easily spend all my time caught up in the turmoil of the times we live in.

I need freedom of spirit and mind to spread my writing wings. So I don’t need to solve the world’s problems, and especially not here on this site.

And yet you will on occasion see some lines on how I feel, hopefully in a natural way, usually condemning hate. I do think we should take a stand.

And finally, I am a progressive even though I don’t agree with everything they come up with, and that’s ok. I wasn’t always progressive though.

I think I can give a unique perspective because I’ve been on both sides of the aisle.

Within my peace I strive for a clear vision.

I hope you all feel respected and appreciated here. Thank you for listening.

Peace to you.

When Our Blue Descended

20170503_164915

When our blue descended it was only the beginning

covering over so much

scar tissue.

The world held its breath

hopeful, that perhaps

just maybe

we could be wrapped

in a thin layer at least

of peace, and compassion

that someday soon

sanity would return

to our nation,

at least we hope so.

Our Rivers Will Speak to Us

20180930_123716

When we are quiet, our spirits drifting

into peace

our rivers will speak to us

as we covet the love

in our hearts.

And yes

it is true sometimes

rivers will carry us

to make a stand.

My friends my river is speaking, and it says Nationalism falsely parades as patriotism. It’s not patriotic.

In one single year from 2016 to 2017 hate crimes against Hispanics in our country went up 40%.

In that same year 2016 to 2017 anti-Semitic hate crimes in our country went up about 60%!!

What does that tell you?

It says Nationalism causes hatred because of an atmosphere of division and strife.

Push back on hate!!

Please vote on November 6th!!

Hatred is un-American.

Writing through the Pain of Our Times

20180707_164603

Writing through pain and tragedy is one of the most difficult things a writer can face. How much do we say or not say?

I like you, feel things deeply. And the last week has often been horrific, hasn’t it?

It would be easy for me to rant against far right extremists. They have caused so much suffering and pain.

And yet right now I am grieving, and standing with the people of Pittsburg, and the Jewish community there. I simply can’t write a poem about nature at the moment.

May the One who made us all, comfort all who are grieving.

Amen.

The flowers are for those that lost loved ones today.

This is too important of a time to be silent. I will be writing more about this historic time in the future.

We must each do what we can to make a difference.

Peace to each one.

My Responsibility

20170503_164915

This is a poetry website, not a political website at all. And yet there are so many things happening in our country that are just horrendous. I often wonder what I should do, what I should say, and do I say something here? I have some very strong opinions, but do I risk ticking off conservative readers? I have struggled with what if anything I should say.

And yet the climate in our nation continues to spiral downward. True I am a poet, but I am also a citizen, and I believe I have been quiet for too long.

For example, our leaders are known now for lying, just constant lying all the time – lying. Yet our president doesn’t consider it lying, because it creates an atmosphere of “winning”. Years ago he started following a term called “exaggeration hyperbole”. Look it up, it’s in his book “The Art of the Deal”. It’s all about looking good. He considers it similar to positive thinking. But we don’t win when we lie do we? Not in the long term.

And now we have the cruelty, the barbaric treatment of people on our southern border. The America I know doesn’t hate immigrants. Unless we are Native Americans we are all immigrants in a way. Our nation was founded on immigration.

This is not a matter of liberal vs. conservative, this is a matter of right and wrong. It is an inhumane policy that rips children away from their parents. Listen, if Mrs. Trump and Laura Bush (wife of President Bush) both speak out against it – you know it’s wrong! It must stop now.

It all speaks of hatred of “the other”, and that must stop too.

I am a citizen and speaking out is my responsibility.

I wish you peace.

Harvesting

20160606_164920

They say the fields are ready for harvesting now,

but some of our leaders became confused

having sown the wrong seeds, the ones

producing weeds, the choking weeds,

instead of life giving fruit

we so desperately need.

If we reach in far enough though,

we can find the seeds

that do grow life, the kind

that search for soil,

but that’s another poem,

altogether.

Independent

100_1605

I’m changing my political affiliation. I was very conservative years ago and yes a Republican. But over time I changed, and my views changed. I became more concerned about people, poverty, and that everyone – should have access to healthcare.

I wasn’t seeing that in the far right, in fact I distinctly saw a lack of compassion, or at least that is what I thought I saw. My wife surviving cancer, and having difficult health problems for years, had a big part to play in my views changing.

And Democrats are far on the other side, believing some things I don’t, but at least I saw a move towards caring about people. Again that was my perception and still is.

The rhetoric in both camps is horrendous, but my opinion is, that it is far worse on the right than it is on the left. The right loves to make personal attacks against people, including our President, and I simply cannot stand it anymore.

So I have no choice really but to vote with a conscience that is independent. And I have not mentioned Trump or Clinton, because I really don’t like either one. I wish I had someone to vote for right now.

Perhaps this is how Independents are born.

Note: This is not a normal post so I will be sending out some poetry later! For now the comments are open.

Peace.
