A Good Conversation

100_1323

In the mountains we are all equally free

allowing our chains to fall away,

as we conquer

the boulders.

Near the top, talking to our own selves

we discover the truths

about who we are

seeing further

into

our souls.

A good conversation.

Returning to the Core

Deep Woods 042

Sometimes we need to return to the core of who we are

never realizing we needed to be there in the first place,

but stretched, to the point of breaking the fever makes us think,

makes us search deep down, into the man or woman

we were meant to be, without the mask, or plastic.

For me it has always been the mountains, my guardians

sometimes dressed in elegant white, you can hear

them whisper when the snow is falling, calling

for me to pay attention, to what I know is true.

My heartbeat, breathing normal and reaching above,

not writing from the pain, but moving forward

thinking like a tree, stronger than the Himalayas,

leading me,

to the strength, of who I am

without plastic.

My core.

Deeper in the Heart by Rumi

Oceans 164

“As you live deeper in the heart, the mirror gets clearer and cleaner.”

Rumi

This quote is rich, and deep with meaning. First, I think Rumi is letting us know that we need to go deeper internally, but he is also saying we need to dwell there on a regular basis, or live there. This is not a vacation where we visit a few days and we go back to the place we were. It is a matter of living in the heart, as a way of life, daily.

But what does he mean by living in the heart? Is it only a matter of how we think? I believe he means for us to be who we really are, not plastic or phony. We also need to remember that Rumi was deeply religious, so for him, I believe he was concerned about honesty, and having faith in God. He was also very much aware of the power of love. So for Rumi, I believe he was saying we should go deeper, discovering who we are, allowing faith to grow strong, and being filled with love.

When we go deeper, and live in our hearts, we can see ourselves better. We can understand ourselves, and the world around us more clearly. We can have a clear vision for the future. We see ourselves for who we really are.

Peace.

The Run

Running at Night

The Run

Street lights piercing the darkness,

no sound except my heart pounding,

feet hitting the pavement, churning,

jogging, then sprinting around

the road that circles the campus,

Alone but strong,

I was 20, sleek and fast.

Confident,

not exactly peace,

but I knew I was alive.

Caught Up in the Wheel

Caught Up in the Wheel.

It hurts to see the Amish

serving rude people at the market,

instead of farming,

instead of being free in their fields,

raising their own food,

or quilting on their back porch.

Windmills producing vegetables.

This woman at the bake shop-

is in pain – trying to cope,

head covering, long dress, and tears,

and her daughter is across the way

suffering abuse as a waitress.

Hurry up with that coffee!

And the father is at the deli,

born to be a farmer,

everyone knows he is a farmer,

yet here he is slicing lunchmeat,

because he cannot afford-

the land.

God, this is awful,

and worse,

I’m a part of it.

Let me walk out of here, now

instead of paying them

to say “Hello-may I help you?”

sick.

We all need to be set free,

from being caught up in the wheel.
