Under the White Flowers

20160514_124136

Under the white flowers a beetle digs franticly to escape a toad,

as encroaching footsteps get louder, a chipmunk stops

and sniffs the air, he rises on two legs, ready

to run. In the distraction, the toad loses

his breakfast, as the beetle buries

itself in the damp mulch,

and worms squirm

to make room.

Life under the white flowers, as the tennis shoes

of the morning walker – pass by.

The First Day

100_1640

At first there was only the blue covering the whole earth,

sparkling, filled with the light of the sun,

energy created. And the earth under

the blue was allowed to surface

as the blue receded.

And the earth was a deep rich brown, with the nutrients

from the blue, the sun began birthing a new color,

and the green of all different shapes

and sizes began to populate

the earth – exploding with life.

And this is why many of us love the blue

and the green without even realizing it,

we celebrate – the first day

and all that was made.

Close to the Heart

20160606_141600

“Keep close to nature’s heart….and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.”

John Muir

We all have ways of being spiritual, but do we feel close to the heart of nature? The connection of humanity and nature is sometimes broken. We can experience a sense of freedom, and even strength, as we seek that connection again. Nature will wash away the junk of everyday life, and our spirits will experience a wonderful peace.

And when we are at peace, the positive will flow through us!

Beauty and Strength

100_1480

“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike.”

John Muir

So where do you go for healing? Do you have a place in nature you can retreat to? Perhaps you have a roof top garden. Where ever you go, may you receive strength and be refreshed!

A Note from Emily

A Poem by Emily Dickinson

Come slowly, Eden!

Lips unused to thee,

Bashful, sip thy jasmines,

As the fainting bee,

Reaching late his flower,

Round her chamber hums,

Counts his nectars – enters,

And is lost in balms!

The Living Forest

20160514_120002

I spent some time recently in a local forest, and I was so glad I did. There is a sense of quiet and peace, but in the spring, the forest comes alive.

I was surprised at how much noise there was as I walked. The birds were especially loud, singing some beautiful songs, while chipmunks skittered, and squirrels quickly climbed trees, trying to hide. And you could hear the wind moving the tops of the hardwood trees.

Having a lot of rain so far this year, means the forest is especially green. It’s easy to associate the color green with giving life. Here are some photographs I took.

Searching for Answers

Maine and More 042

We can search for answers,

in the tragedies, and never,

understand,

we can search in the waves,

and receive the calmness,

but not know why,

and the questions continue,

haunting us,

taking over, commanding our thoughts,

and we are crushed.

Until a ray of light,

peeks in, and reflects on a mirror,

a sunrise, a flower opening,

the grey defeated,

with a hummingbird, sipping nectar,

a butterfly,

or a smile reflecting,

from another soul.

And we realize the questions are still,

there but smaller, not controlling us,

chains falling,

telling us it’s ok,

to not to know why.

We can be free,

enjoying the journey,

soaking in the moment,

simply being a part,

of creation.

The Beauty of Water

Maine and More 304

“We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.”

Jacques Cousteau

Why is it that when we look at water, it does something to us inside? Water often has a tangible, calming, or peaceful effect on us. You can feel it. Looking at the ocean or a beautiful lake can even be a spiritual experience, but why is that?

I believe the answer is that we are connected to this wonderful part of nature, in so many ways. Our bodies, and yes that inner person too, can sense the connection. So much of our life depends upon water, and we need water more than food. Our bodies are mostly made of water, and it’s no coincidence that 2/3 of the world is made of water also.

We are absolutely connected, in beautiful ways, like Cousteau the famous explorer, has said. So the next time you see a large body of water, allow yourself to feel connected. Drink in the beauty.

I wish you peace.

The Beauty of a Sunday

Oceans 993

A Prose Poem

The problem with getting older, is that you’ve heard every sermon, or you think you have.

I didn’t learn faith in a church, the woods taught me, when I was young, showed me there was something greater. I saw the church filled with people, but their hearts were not still.

Later, the wooden benches were hard, difficult sermons, long sermons, with harsh words. Railing against the Pope, or President Obama. I was confused, and my heart grew sick.

Healing for me came, in the stained glass, the space. Certainly in the peace, and in the beauty of faith. Now the sermons are shorter, and the words are decorated with love. His presence. What can we give to others?

All of this reminding me of the creation, the woods, the rivers, the mountains, and the beauty of life.

My heart is full now, and contented.

And in the late afternoon, Sundays were made, for napping.

The Reluctant Warrior

Oceans 2031

No one ever told him,

he would need the mountains,

the wholeness and healing,

of peace,

the Creator breathing.

No one ever told him,

there would be explosions,

tearing the sky,

battles raging, bloodied swords,

his Queen imploding.

He fights on,

only because he has to,

he would rather live in a tree,

sleep on some rocks,

while the sky is healed, by clean water.

He picks up his sword anyway,

the shield,

armed with words,

and a clean heart,

he fights.

No turning back,

no confession of cowards,

He will live, in the mountains,

because the mountains live,

in him.
