A Quote by Robert Frost on Greatness

Mountains and Rivers 157

There never was any heart truly great and generous, that was not also tender and compassionate.

Robert Frost

I love the poetry of Robert Frost, and this quote gives us yet another look, into the heart and thinking of the poet. There have been many great people of history, but all too often, the people that were called great, were people of war, or that loved war. I love this quote, because I think Frost was saying true greatness is connected to generosity, and that this greatness and generosity, come from, or come out of, a heart of tenderness and compassion.

And let’s not forget that there is a huge difference between weakness and compassion. In fact, a person that is compassionate is incredibly strong. There is nothing more powerful on earth, than love. It takes great strength to forgive someone that hates you. To have tenderness, and compassion for that same person, takes amazing strength, and is one of the most important battles you will ever face.

Never let hatred rule over you. Break the throne of hatred, by responding in the opposite way, with tenderness, and compassion. That is what true greatness is all about.

Peace.

The Good Ground by Rumi

Mountains and Rivers 052

“Very little grows on jagged rock. Be grounded.

Be crumbled so wildflowers will come up where you are.”

Rumi

In this quote, Rumi is sharing about more than just wildflowers. He is using this illustration to point to a truth about our lives, and more specifically, about our internal lives. When our lives, and yes our hearts, are like stone or rocks, not much is going to grow. It is difficult to be fruitful. Another way of saying this is, that there is a blockage between us and potential growth.

Our lives need to be based in ground that can produce, in his words here “crumbled” means easy to plant, or just naturally loose, rich soil, which allows plants to grow. This is why farmers plow their fields, and gardeners like myself, till the soil before we plant. This allows the plants, even wild ones, (and weeds) to grow much easier. In a very real sense, our soils needs to be loose, not hard as a rock.

When our lives are like that, beautiful things will grow from us, even when we don’t expect it. Wildflowers are spontaneous, surprising, and intensely beautiful. We can be like that too, we just need to take care of the soil.

Peace.
